The world as we know it is coming to an end or at least a great transformation is taking its place.
Right before our eyes and the not so distance future, you will see this global transformation start to unravel probably as soon as this years end.
Aside from the obvious signs all around us, about 3 years ago CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) and the IRS, created the International Tax Office. Where they keep track of your tax obligation no matter where you hide in the civilized world.
We talked about it in previous bulletins, so we will not get into it now.
But, both the CRA and IRS in their infinite wisdom, God Bless their souls; came up with the new Special Assessment Program, which is really not new at all but have decided to beef it up.
What does that mean for everyone?
This means, that if you have a side business or employment expenses outside the work place, such as a home office. Chances are you WILL be audited with a level 2 audit (a lengthy questioner and you have to mail in your paper work).
From a clients point - it is irritable and frustrating, because almost all the time someone else prepared your tax return and you don't have a clue what to send in and not to send. So you will turn to your bookkeeper or accountant and overload them with more paperwork and expect him or her to sort it for free. Also CRA/IRS will ALWAYS find deductions that they will wrongfully deny you on technicalities, such as if you use a percentage of mileage driven as opposed to providing them with a log for the mileage you spent on your business (who in the world ever keeps a log of their mileage unless you are a truck driver).
On that alone they will deny ALL of your vehicle expenses, which is the biggest or second biggest deduction of your small enterprise.
So after all is clear and done, you end up paying taxes while large corporations end up paying little or NO tax.
Moral of this act of stupidity and personal invasive-ness is that it it is a lose, lose situation for all involved.
It is a losing situation for the individual, because it is a great inconvenience on their already busy schedule and because CRA and the IRS are taking back part of your refund that rightfully belongs to you.
It is a losing situation for the bookkeeper because, from an accountants or bookkeepers point, for most people are your loyal customer for as long as you are getting them a nice refund. The moment they get audited or have to pay in, its the bookkeepers fault and the following year they will be off to another tax preparer, thinking that he or she will do a much better job.
They lose business which took them years to build and depend on that extra income during tax season to provide for their family and may have to wait another year to put braces on their kids or take that much needed vacation.
And it is a losing situation for CRA or the IRS, because all these honest hard working Canadians and Americans lose their dream by being harassed and those that are actually making money, will not pay taxes on that extra income, because they will go underground, (most of my clients with side businesses have already told me that, saying that it is not worth the hassle) which is what CRA and the IRS has been trying to prevent since their inception.
My question is this. If these agencies continually reassess people; it is because someone did not do their job when the taxes were filed and assessed the first time.
So why give someone a refund, then ask for it back, once the money has been spent and charge interest when they know the person cannot pay it back.
The underground economy is growing and their is no one to blame but the government themselves.
It is like I always say "The only difference between the government and thieves in jail, is that one has a licence to steal and the other does not and got caught"
Book of the Week
At the sight of Molly chattering baby talk to his daughter, something turned over in Ethan’s chest.
Some nameless emotion that felt so right and good that he wanted to laugh out loud. She hadn’t held Laney long, but the fact that she’d held her at all was important, both to her and to him. She needed to know that he trusted her with his child. And he needed to know she cared. The admission hit him square in the chest.
“I’m glad you came over.”, “Me, too.” The TV flickered. He had no idea what programs had come and gone in the past two hours. And he didn’t care. Talking to Molly, listening to her laugh, sharing his day with her was far more pleasurable than any television show.
He wasn’t lonely. Didn’t have time to be, but whenever Molly wasn’t around, something seemed to be missing....

This week on Idiocracy - I don't know if you have noticed, but if you have a look around you, the world seems to be getting dumber by the day. I don't know if it is something in the air, the water, the food, the education system (caused by all the above) or all the above. But something is definitely happening to people around the globe. So we have decided to ad this little fun piece, after the movie Idiocracy, entitled "This week in idiocracy".
If you have any idiocratic stories you want to share with us, e-mail them to us and we will post it in the following week's newsletter.
This week on idiocracy
- This is a story that I picked up up Yahoo news.ca this week.
Earlier this week, a UK man reported that he was being kicked out of Canada for helping his girlfriend with a DIY (do it yourself) job in her apartment. Tom Rolfe, 24, told the Mirror that he and his girlfriend had driven to Montana from Edmonton so that he could return through the border and have an application for residency processed. (He had been in Canada on a visitor’s visa.) Coming back into Alberta, however, his case was closely scrutinized. A Canadian Border Service Agency official went through Rolfe’s camera (which, perhaps surprisingly, is within their rights) and found photos of him in girlfriend’s home filling holes in the walls where paintings had hung. Apparently, the border officer decided Rolfe was not just voluntarily pitching in around his girlfriend’s Edmonton residence but actually interfering in the local job market, potentially stealing work from a Canadian citizen. His application was denied; he was told he had eight days to get out of the country and barred from returning for two years. “It is just ridiculous, I was helping Sam tidy up her flat before she sold it so we could get a place together,” Rolfe told a reporter.
This is one of the stupidest things I have ever read. In other words you can be here on a visitors visa and help a friend or girlfriend / boyfriend out as long as you don't get caught.
In other words don't make them diner because you may steal work from a cook or help with the laundry because you might me taking away potential Canadian employment or business from the local laundry mat. Which the girlfriend would never hire in the first place.
This story takes this weeks prize in idiocracy.
